Itaipu transfers less to Paraguay amid higher ANDE usage

Between January and September 2026, Itaipu's transfers to Paraguay fell by 6.3% due to higher energy usage by ANDE.
Information published by the ABC Color newspaper indicates that the financial transfers from the Itaipu hydroelectric plant to the Paraguayan State under Annex C totaled US$ 345 million between January and September 2026. This amount represents a 6.3% drop compared to the US$ 368 million recorded in the same period of the previous year.
Factors Behind the Decline in Transfers
The main reason for the decrease in foreign currency received by the country lies in the dynamics of energy cession compensation. Since the Administración Nacional de Electricidad (ANDE) contracted a larger volume of energy from the plant (a 17.5% increase in supply, reaching 21,619 GWh), less surplus from the Paraguayan quota was left to be ceded to Brazil.
- Remittances for energy compensation dropped from US$ 133 million to US$ 100 million (-24.8%).
- Payments regarding royalties rose from US$ 189 million to US$ 198 million (+4.8%).
- The binational's total energy generation in the first nine months of 2026 reached 58,370 GWh, surpassing the 52,645 GWh of 2025.
- The availability index of the generating units reached 96.22% by September 2026.
While royalties help fund the National General Budget (PGN) and local governments, the values obtained from the energy cession to Brazil make up the National School Feeding Fund (Fonae) and municipalities. Meanwhile, cumulative generation since operations began in 1984 reached 3,183,049 GWh.
