Ex-minister asks BCP for clarity on Ueno Bank case

Former minister Benigno López demanded more transparency from the Central Bank of Paraguay regarding the Ueno Bank case and pointed out risks in IPS funds.

Call for greater transparency in the financial system

Former Minister of Finance and former president of the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS), Benigno López, stated in an interview that he expected greater precision in the report sent by the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) to Congress regarding Ueno Bank. The information was originally reported by the ABC Color newspaper.

According to López, although the BCP answered questions instead of hiding behind banking secrecy, the document omitted responses regarding third-party operations protected by law. For the former official, the lack of detailed clarification on related companies and compliance with loan limits generates doubts in the market.

Key points highlighted in the analysis

  • The BCP answered part of Congress's questions, but eight answers were omitted due to secrecy.
  • Benigno López expressed concern over the relationship between banks and related companies.
  • Around USD 300 million in IPS pension funds are deposited in the financial institution.
  • The BCP reported that an administrative summary on the case should last about four months.

The former minister also drew attention to the concentration of IPS social security resources in the entity, stressing that the discussion involves risk management and the soundness of deposits in the national financial system.
